Announcement of $1.7 million in funding for dairy products | Vermont Business Magazine

Vermont Agency for Agriculture, Food and Markets The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center (NE-DBIC), hosted by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets, has announced three funding opportunities for dairy producers and service providers.

Grant for on-farm milk storage and handling
Dairy producers can apply for funds to support the purchase of equipment and supplies to improve milk storage, handling and energy efficiency. Applicants can choose from a list of eligible equipment. This grant has an application period of August 25-October 6. Grants will range from $15,000 to $50,000 with a 25% matching commitment. Match waivers may be available. Dairy Farm Cohort Technical Assistance Program
Service providers will be able to submit proposals to develop cohorts of dairy farmers to address areas of technical assistance relevant to their region. Building on the success of eight current cohorts funded by NE-DBIC, service providers can submit project proposals up to $150,000. Topics may relate to grazing, forage improvement, innovative farming practices, marketing and/or other areas of farmer support. Dairy Education Funding
Funds are available for service providers and dairy farmer associations to develop events, webinars, educational series or conferences to increase farmer-focused production and business sustainability education. Working Lands Enterprise Initiative grants are open!

The first round of FY23 Working Lands Enterprise Initiative applications are open! The period for submitting applications is from August 12 to September 23. Click on the links below for more information!

Grants to producer associations:
Vermont-based nonprofit grower association groups that represent and promote Vermont agricultural, food, beverage, forestry, or fiber products are invited to apply. Prices range from $10,000 to $20,000. To consult the request for candidates, click on here.

Subsidies to service providers:
Service Provider Grant projects will include the provision of direct and indirect services to support the development of Vermont-based farmland businesses through business assistance such as marketing plans, business and financial planning, as well as transitions and business succession. $25 million available for on-farm conservation innovation grants

$25 million available for on-farm conservation innovation grants

The application period is now open for the Conservation Innovation Essay Program. This competitive grant program is offered by the USDA and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) to support the development of new tools, approaches, practices, and technologies to foster resource conservation on private lands.

This year’s funding priorities are climate-smart agricultural solutions, irrigation water management, nutrient management, and soil health.

Applications are accepted until September 22. According to the NRCS, “Private entities whose primary business is related to agriculture, non-governmental agencies with experience working with agricultural producers, and non-federal government agencies are eligible to apply.

New farm succession planning resource

The UVM Extension Agricultural Business Team offers free assistance to any agricultural business in Vermont looking for succession planning support.

This service is designed to help farmers identify the urgency of their needs, find appropriate resources and information based on those needs, and provide feedback on developing a plan to meet them.

You can fill out a short intake form to get started and a member of the team will contact you.

All services provided through this intake form are free and available to any type of farming business in Vermont.

Goat & Small Ruminant Breeding Workshop

Join NOFA-VT and the Vermont Sheep & Goat Association at Ice House Farm for a tour of their regenerative farming practices and a Q&A on livestock management and nurturing care.

Morgan and Chad Beckwith have been producing raw goat milk for kefir, yogurt and cheese since 2016. This workshop gives you the opportunity to learn about herd health, pasture management and milk production.

The workshop is $25 for NOFA-VT members, $35 for non-members, and free for those who identify as BIPOC. It takes place at Ice House Farm, 421 Hathaway Road, Goshen, VT 05733. Registration is required.
