Better Business Bureau Warns Vacation Buyers About Online Scams

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Better Business Bureau has said it expects this holiday season to be unlike any other as more people go online to shop, but with more online shopping , new dangers are added.

Daniel Irwin of the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South said there’s a specific reason more and more people are shopping online.

“We expect the 2021 holiday season to be unlike any other,” Irwin said.

He said labor shortages and supply chain issues were mainly to blame. However, he also said that the crooks were taking notes and preparing to take your money.

He said online shopping scams accounted for 40% of all scams reported to the Better Business Bureau.

Just in the Memphis metro area, Irwin said he received 187 online scam reports, which equates to a total loss of over $ 144,000 so far this year.

This is almost triple the amount they saw last year when they received 139 reports amounting to a total loss of just over $ 50,000.

Irwin said there are ways to protect yourself and that is by recognizing the red flags.

“There are tons of bogus websites out there and they can be very hard to spot,” he said.

So here are a few points you should be aware of:

– Huge discount on a hot item. He says if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam.

– Grammar of crooks. Irwin says if a site is full of spelling mistakes or bad grammar, it’s probably wrong.

–Limited or suspicious contact information.

Irwin also suggests that people use a credit card when shopping so you can easily dispute fraudulent charges, but if a site doesn’t allow you to use your credit card, he said you should log out.

“Or if they take your credit card and it doesn’t go through and they call you and tell you they want you to pay via zelle or cashapp, that will be a big red flag,” he said. he declares.
