Three State University College in Oswego staff members – for whom a year of adaptation built on their previous years of service – won the chancellor’s award for excellence in professional service.
The 2021 winners are Jennifer Broderick, creative director of alumni communications and development; Angie brown, director of student health services; and Kate wolfe lyga, Director of the Guidance Service Center.

A member of the Alumni and Development Creative Team since 1997, Broderick’s tasks have grown and evolved to make her a valuable campus-wide team player, wrote Nominator Margaret Spillett, Director communications for the development and engagement of alumni.
Calling it the “backbone” of this team, Spillett said Broderick “served as the production manager for all communications, including an annual schedule of over 220 unique emails, dozens of print jobs. and hundreds of social posts on three platforms, among other communications. “
“She is detail-oriented, organized and efficient in managing a very comprehensive record of tasks,” Spillett wrote. “She creates institutional knowledge that will guide the college into the future. It allows us to move forward regularly while maintaining the highest quality and consistency in our communications.
Broderick’s production management skills parallel his creative talent and ability to work with others and adapt.
“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jen has remained flexible and ready to do whatever is necessary to keep our alumni and students engaged and concerned about college,” Spillett wrote. “She showed great initiative in learning new skills when new tasks were presented to us, such as creating the online magazine, creating Kudoboards for upper class and colleague retreats and creation of editable PDF forms. “
“Her work behind the scenes makes us all look good,” wrote Mary Canale, college vice president for alumni development and engagement. “Her work clearly helps us express who we are as alumni and college community, shapes others’ perceptions of the college, and elevates our work through compelling visuals.”
Broderick’s highly developed skills and easy-going personality make her sought after for a variety of projects and virtually every major special event of the past 25 years, Canale added.
“She is an exceptionally caring and dedicated employee, and will do whatever work it takes not only to get the job done, but often beyond our expectations,” noted Canale. “She recently redesigned the award-winning OSWEGO Alumni magazine, its corresponding website and the main alumni and development website while maintaining our division’s daily communications.”
Laura Kelly, a 2009 Oswego graduate and now executive director of the Oswego Alumni Association, recalled as a student Broderick made her feel welcome and valued – while also shaping her features. an exemplary professional.
“As a full-time colleague, I enjoyed these same characteristics, along with Jen’s humor and optimism, which make everyday projects, tasks and challenges easier and more enjoyable to tackle collaboratively.” , Kelly wrote. “She has also helped find cost effective solutions to traditional marketing efforts, after evaluating research and emerging trends in our industry.
“Angie has demonstrated an unmatched work ethic, a commitment to the inclusion of marginalized students and a desire to support the overall health and well-being of the SUNY Oswego campus community,” said wrote nominator Wolfe-Lyga, who was unaware that she was also nominated for the same award.
Brown’s many accomplishments include leading the college’s re-accreditation as part of the Ambulatory Health Care Accreditation Association, serving as a member of the Founding Committee of the Students Helping Oz Peers Pantry (SHOP ), expanding the “Get Yourself Tested” sexual health awareness initiative and providing a more inclusive approach to health services.
“Angie has succeeded in the difficult task of maintaining stable availability of health care for students while innovating many treatment options and services,” noted Wolfe-Lyga. “Through her hard work and dedication to the students of SUNY Oswego, Angie has led and supported the college’s efforts to celebrate diversity by including services like transgender care.”
In the fight against the pandemic, Brown was a superstar and a stabilizing influence who made a real difference in a new, evolving and complex situation, wrote Kathleen Evans, assistant vice president for student development.
“Specifically, she helped develop our campus isolation and quarantine plans, campus security plans, and worked with outside agencies to provide adequate testing, contact tracing and communications on the campus. campus regarding the pandemic, ”Evans said. “She worked endless hours during the fall 2020 semester – including most evenings and weekends, contacting the Northern State Medical University and the Oswego County Health Department. , as well as directly with our students and their families, providing a very empathetic and professional response to test results. “

In addition to the level of technical knowledge and skills of Brown, a family nurse practitioner who joined the college in 2013 and has been the Director of Health Services since 2015, her ability to work with and lead others has been the key to such a human experience. profession focused, wrote Evans.

Wolfe-Lyga, who returned to her alma mater in 2016, “rose to the post of Director of Counseling Services with both feet and an energy that has not yet released,” wrote nominee Jane LeBlanc, Director. clinical services associate. “She started with a team spirit and was able to show her enthusiasm for change and challenges early on, with the goal of meeting students where they are in today’s world and getting the best out of it. taken advantage of all the resources that the campus has to offer. “
Since then, Wolfe-Lyga has accomplished many tasks, large and small, including leading the tremendous effort required to achieve International Accreditation of Counseling Services certification in 2018. Wolfe-Lyga recently won a Special Commendation Award from from her colleagues at the Association for University and Directors of College Counseling Centers, recognizing that she is one of the nation’s best in her profession.
At the SUNY level, Wolfe-Lyga is Special Advisor to President Deborah F. Stanley, who co-chairs the SUNY Mental Health Task Force. “She presented and championed the students and centers at the chancellor’s level,” LeBlanc wrote. “Closer to home, additional praise can be given for his work within Student Affairs and for bringing together a number of departments,” such as leading efforts to support SHOP, a wellness fair student mentality, resources, training, committee work and more.
The proponents said Wolfe-Lyga’s commitment appears in the many grants and new programs she brings to campus, including a federal SAMSHA Garrett Lee Smith grant for campus suicide prevention, which reported 287 $ 000 to SUNY Oswego in 2020. “The goal of this program is to develop a comprehensive curriculum and evidence-based approach to improve services for all students, including those at risk for suicide, depression, mental illness severe and / or substance use disorder that may lead to academic failure, ”LeBlanc wrote.

Robin McAleese, now retired member of the advisory services staff and former recipient of the Chancellor’s Award, said Wolfe-Lyga “embodies the essential traits of a strong leader”.
