Mopane worms help students start their business!

Mopane worms became a business venture for Wendy Vesela.

The chemical engineering student runs a company called Matomani that uses Mopane worms in its food products.

Mopane worms can be cooked or enjoyed as a dry snack. Here are some of Wendy’s dishes using To Mopane:

According to Wikipedia, ‘Gonimbrasia belina is a species of emperor moth native to the warmer regions of southern Africa. Its large edible caterpillar, known as the mopane, madora, amacimbi or maontja worm, feeds mainly but not exclusively on mopane leaves.

It’s quite strange to think that worms can be used in food, although many restaurants offer snails – so it was only a matter of time.

“Mopane worms are a good source of protein,” says registered dietitian Sylven Masoga, who works in the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at University of Limpopo.
