Woman raped in United Airlines business class

While airline passenger misconduct has become incredibly common these days, it’s on a whole other level.

Man arrested for rape on United Airlines flight to London

The sun reports that a man has been accused of raping a woman in business class on a recent transatlantic flight. Specifically, this incident occurred on United Airlines flight UA14 from Newark (EWR) to London (LHR) on Sunday, January 30, 2022.

According to the report (and Met Police confirmed the arrest and investigation):

  • The man and woman were both 40 years old and traveling in business class
  • They did not know each other before the trip, but had been seen talking to each other before the flight in the living room
  • At some point during the flight, when most of the other passengers were asleep, the woman was allegedly raped by the man she was talking to.
  • She was upset and reported it to the flight attendants, who asked the police to meet the arriving flight.
  • The man was taken into custody at Heathrow Police Station, where his fingerprints, photo ID and DNA sample were taken. he was later released pending further investigation
  • A forensic search was carried out in the aircraft cabin
  • The woman was taken to a rape counseling suite and questioned

What an absolutely horrible story. There is definitely a higher level of vulnerability when sleeping near strangers on a plane without any kind of privacy. Even though this woman was chatting with the man before the robbery, there is a fine line between being friendly with someone and what would have ended up happening. Unfortunately, some people just don’t have a good sense of boundaries, and a very serious line has been crossed.

This happened on a United flight from Newark to London

What kind of plane was it?

For context, this flight was operated by one of United Airlines’ premium heavy-duty Boeing 767-300s. The aircraft has 46 business class seats, in a 1-1-1 configuration, so each passenger has their own pod and direct aisle access.

Although there is good privacy and the cabins are usually dark in the middle of the night, they are still not fully enclosed suites with doors, or anything like that.

At the end of the line

A man has been arrested at Heathrow Airport after a United Airlines flight from Newark, after allegedly raping another passenger. According to reports, the couple had been drinking together in the lounge before the flight, then while other passengers were sleeping, he raped her.

If this is all as reported, I hope the man is held accountable for how he acted. While there’s all sorts of bad passenger behavior these days, raping someone on a plane is terrible, and something we don’t see often.
